| Erst wenn man um den die Blicke abschirmenden Waldrand herum geht, sieht man: Der Bauer hat illegal gut einen Hektar des Waldes abgeholzt um seine Viehweide zu vergrößern. Die Behörden sehen nichts und tun nichts. | Only walking around the edge of the forest which hides everything from our sight we can see that the farmer has illegally chopped down about one hectare of forest to enlarge his pasture. The authorities don´t see nothing and don´t do nothing. | ||||||

| Mehr Weideland für mehr Rindviecher. Für die zweibeinigen ist es offensichtlich profitabeler den Wald abzuholzen als ihn zu erhalten. | More pastures for more cattle. Obviously it is more profitable for the bipeds to chop the forest down than to preserve it. | ||||||

| In Hanglagen ist der zerstörende Huftritt der Rinder besonders wirksam. Wenn da wo früher schützender Regenwald stand auch noch die Grasnabe aufgetreten wird, gibt es kein Halten mehr. Der Regen spült Humus und ganze Hänge bergab. | Especially in hillside situations the step of the cattle´s hoofs is very destructive. If in areas beforehand covered with protective rainforest additionally the meadow is scarified, there´s no stopping. The rain washes down the humus layer and also entire hills. | ||||||

| Wenn die Erde so aufreisst, dann wird Wiederbewaldung sehr mühsam. Doch meist werden weiterhin Rinder in die Hänge getrieben. | When the ground rips open like that, the reafforestation is very troublesome. But in most cases cattle are being driven up to graze on this hillsides. | ||||||

| Auf den ersten Blick etwas ausgetrockneter Wald ... in Wirklichkeit ist es eine neue Bedrohung für die Waldökosysteme in der Region: Plantagen mit fremdartigen Baumarten (hier Teak) | What looks like slightly dried up forest at first view in reality proves as a new threat for the region´s forest ecosystems: plantations with foreign tree species (here it is teak) | ||||||

| Teak stammt ursprünglich aus (Südost-) Asien, wo andere Niederschlagsbedingungen herrschen. In dieser costaricanischen Region mit einigen Wochen Trockenzeit jedes Jahr fällt die Teakplantage in einen Trockenstress, der für den von den Investoren errechneten Holzzuwachs wenig gut ist, was diese offensichtlich nicht von der Anplanzung neuer Plantagen abhält. | Teak originates from (Southeast-)Asia where there is more precipitation. In this region of Costa Rica with a yearly dry season of several weeks the teak plantation is exposed to water stress, which will not effect the increment of wood calculated by the investors in a positive way. Nevertheless, this dose not stop them from planting more plantations. | ||||||

| Die Artenvielfalt in dieser Plantage mag noch geringer sein, als die einer Viehweide. Aber darüber sollte man nicht streiten. Der Maßstab ist ein intaktes Waldökosystem, welches früher hier stand. | There may be less biodiversity in this plantation than in a pasture. But there´s not point arguing about it. Yardstick is the intact forest ecosystem which was here before. | ||||||

| Eine Kaffeeplantage. Manchmal sieht man diese in solchen Steillagen, dass man um die Sicherheit der Arbeiter dort bangen muss. Absturzgefahr für Mensch und Boden! | A coffee plantation. Sometimes you can see them situated so steeply that you have to worry about the safety of the workers there. Danger of falling for man and soil! | ||||||
